4-H OPEN FREESTYLE REINING
& PARADE OF BREEDS

4-H Costumed Riders, Reining, and a Parade of Breeds

Have you ever seen a big yellow chicken ride a bridle less horse? How about a human cannonball that dives off his galloping horse all in time to unforgettable music? At this year’s 4-H Open Freestyle Reining, open to all participants, on October 17 at the Sul Ross Arena in Alpine Texas, you may see horses in bikinis or hula skirts and best of all, there is no spectator fee. Creativity in costumes, music, and equine performances are all showcased in this competition divided by groups from ages eight and under to adult. All participants will be vying for special prizes to be awarded to the Best Dressed Horse, Best Adaptation of Screen Media, and more. Each horseback participant will put on a show for the crowd incorporating certain required elements of reining such as a spin or rollback. The reining maneuvers themselves are cued to the horse by the rider’s legs, the distribution of weight in the saddle, and by the reins. The current Presidio County Extension Agent, Jesse Lea Schneider, founded the event 18 years ago along with a tireless and dedicated committee, which states that everyone is welcome to come to this top-notch event that encourages and rewards creativity with horses. Every participant from the youngest to the oldest will receive a prize ranging from a new saddle to the top-scoring 4-Her and a custom made hat for the reserve, to saddle pads, belt buckles, and new tack! Three judges will be scoring points not only on the execution of the maneuvers for each age division but extra points will be awarded for costume, choreography, and originality. An extra exhibit this year will be a parade of horse breeds from around the Big Bend during which riders will showcase their chosen breed and style of riding. These horse owners will be available for questions or a close up look at their horses after the show! Also acting as official announcer for the show, Jesse Lea Schneider says the competition starts promptly at 9:30 a.m. So, design a costume for you and your horse, create your own pattern, set it to your favorite music and join us for .....
